Welcome to the Sunset Avenue School Media Center. Home of the Dark Horses! SAS Media Center is a flexible access library which meets the needs of the SAS students. Hello, I am the SAS librarian. I believe the library's service role is to meet the needs of its patrons. My patrons are the SAS students, teachers, and staff. As the librarian, I aim to provide and maintain resources for teachers to use regarding their particular curriculum, as well as appropriately leveled books and magazines for the students to read. The library's service role is to extend the learning in my school's classrooms as well as the professional growth of SAS teachers and staff.

The library is open during the school day and operates on a flexible schedule. This means teachers and students have access the the library's resources at any time during the school day. Students are allowed to visit the library upon the discretion of the teacher and librarian. SAS library encourages and invites approved volunteers from the community. No school can be successful without volunteers. Volunteers may help with activities, interact with the students or help with the management of the library. If interested in volunteering in the library, please contact the librarian using the listed contact information. The library is actively involved in fundraisers such as Book Fairs. Book Fairs offer students, parents and staff in-school access to purchase books. It also provides SAS Media Center with a means to fund additional resources for the library. Book Fairs are offered in the Fall and Spring. The SAS Media Center looks forward to serving its school community.

NC EBOB

Our school participates in Battle of the Books. EBOB is a program that is sponsored by the North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA). Each year the NCSLMA chooses fifteen books based upon literary merit, reading level difficulty, and genre. Schools that choose to participate in the EBOB program create teams of fourth and fifth graders who read and study the books and prepare to answer questions about the books in order to participate in a ‘quiz bowl’ style competition. Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is an independent reading program which combines reading practice and software-based reading assessment. AR:

• MOTIVATES students .

• EMPOWERS educators with reports.

• REINFORCES comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills.

Surrounding students with a wide variety of literature and nonfiction texts in the classroom, in the school library, and at home is a great start to creating lifelong readers. This technology-based program creates a personalized and engaging learning environment that ensures independent reading accountability.
